A picturesque Sicilian town is offering an all-expenses-paid holiday for just €1, in a bid to boost tourism during the off-season.
The town of Siculiana, located on Sicily’s west coast, has launched a unique initiative that allows a select group of travelers to enjoy a weekend getaway complete with accommodation, meals, and guided tours. The only cost? Sicily’s €1 tourist tax.
A €1 Holiday in Siculiana: What’s Included?
Organized by the Siculiana Tourism Board, the offer covers a two-night stay at one of the board’s partner accommodations, as well as meals and sightseeing tours. However, participants must arrange their own travel to the town.
Upon arrival, guests will be greeted with a welcome drink at their hotel and will enjoy another refreshment by the marina before departure.
The itinerary includes guided excursions to some of the area’s most scenic attractions, such as Siculiana Marina and the Torre Salsa Nature Reserve, known for its protected beaches and dramatic cliffs.
How to Apply for the €1 Holiday
Those hoping to secure a spot in this exclusive offer must submit a creative video application explaining why they want to visit Siculiana.
The Siculiana Tourism Board has suggested a few themes for submissions, including:
- “We deserve a holiday.”
- “We love Sicily.”
- “We want to eat Sicilian food.”
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be over 18 years old.
- Apply in pairs (friends, family members, or spouses).
- Include their relationship, ages, city of residence, and contact details in the submission.
The board will select 10 duos based on originality, creativity, enthusiasm, and passion for discovering Siculiana. Winners will be announced on 20 March, with the first holiday set for 4-6 April.
A Video Diary Experience
During their stay, participants will be asked to document their trip by recording a video diary, highlighting their favorite moments and experiences. These clips will be shared with the Siculiana Tourism Board to help promote the town as a travel destination.
A New Approach to Tourism Promotion
This initiative is part of Siculiana’s broader efforts to increase visitor interest beyond the peak season. Similar to Italy’s €1 home auctions, which aim to revitalize small towns, the €1 holiday scheme hopes to showcase Siculiana’s charm to a wider audience.
Applications for this one-of-a-kind getaway must be submitted by 15 March.
