A new Ritz-Carlton Reserve property is set to open in Shanghai in 2030, bringing the luxury hotel brand’s highly personalised approach to one of the world’s largest cities for the first time.
The Ritz-Carlton Reserve will be located on Shanghai’s North Bund and will occupy 103 floors of a new skyscraper. The property will feature 110 guest rooms and suites, offering visitors a luxury retreat above one of China’s busiest urban districts.
Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties are known for providing personalised service, local cultural experiences and a strong connection with their surroundings. Most existing Reserve hotels are located away from major cities, making the Shanghai project a significant expansion for the brand.
The hotel is being designed as a “sanctuary within the city”, according to the company. Facilities will include a spa and wellness retreat, an indoor swimming pool and a gym. Several restaurants and bars are also planned.
Tina Edmundson, president of luxury at Marriott International, said the Reserve concept was built around creating experiences that are closely connected to their destinations.
She said bringing the concept to Shanghai represented an important development for the brand, highlighting the city’s combination of history, culture, creativity and international influence.
The Shanghai property will be part of The Ritz-Carlton brand, which is owned by Marriott International. The company has indicated that additional urban Reserve properties are planned for major international cities, although specific locations have not yet been announced.
Ritz-Carlton Reserve currently has a small global portfolio. Its first property opened in 2009 at Phulay Bay in Thailand, and the collection has grown to nine properties.
Unlike conventional luxury chain hotels that can follow similar designs and services in different locations, Reserve properties are intended to reflect the culture and character of their surroundings.
Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Indonesia, is located near an indigenous Balinese village and offers guests locally focused experiences, including traditional palm reading and numerology sessions.
The collection’s newest property is Siari, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit, which opened in November 2025.
The Shanghai development will mark a departure from the secluded settings traditionally associated with the Reserve brand. Its location on the North Bund will place the hotel in the heart of Shanghai while maintaining the brand’s focus on privacy, wellness and personalised experiences.
With its high-rise setting, the property is expected to offer guests a different interpretation of the Reserve concept, combining the brand’s destination-focused hospitality with the scale and energy of a major global city.
