A regional airport in Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture is set for a major Pokémon-themed transformation as part of broader efforts to revive tourism and support recovery following the devastating 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake.
Noto Satoyama Airport, which operates flights solely between Noto and Tokyo Haneda, will be renamed “Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport” as part of a long-term redesign project. The updated airport experience is scheduled to open on 7 July 2026 and will run through September 2029, combining travel infrastructure with one of Japan’s most globally recognised cultural exports.
The airport has described the initiative as a world-first domestic aviation hub fully themed around Pokémon. Visitors will encounter 111 flying-type Pokémon integrated across the terminal’s four floors, with installations designed to create an immersive environment for passengers.
At the centre of the atrium, a large display featuring Pikachu riding atop an aircraft will serve as the main visual attraction. The surrounding décor will include bird, insect and dragon-inspired Pokémon, reflecting the theme of flight and movement.
Airport officials confirmed that certain variations, including Mega Evolutions and regional forms, will not be included in the design. However, themed artwork will extend throughout the building, including murals, signage and structural decorations.
The first-floor arrivals area will feature a mural titled “A Bright Future,” inspired by the natural landscapes of the Noto region. Outside the terminal, pillars and walkways will be decorated with Pokémon characters intended to create a sense of anticipation and excitement for travellers.
The second floor will continue the theme with character displays integrated into informational boards and airport guidance systems.
Beyond tourism promotion, the project is closely tied to post-disaster recovery efforts. The 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in 2024 caused widespread destruction, leaving hundreds dead, thousands injured and significant damage to local infrastructure.
Officials said the Pokémon branding and redesigned logo are intended to bring optimism to affected communities, particularly children, while helping restore visitor numbers to the region.
Passenger facilities will also adopt the theme. The An-non Restaurant will serve Pokémon-inspired dishes, including themed pancakes and beverages, while a dedicated gift shop will sell limited-edition merchandise such as T-shirts, luggage tags and keychains featuring the airport’s new design and a special “Sky of Hope” artwork.
A themed tour bus service will connect Noto Airport with Kanazawa Station and nearby tourist sites, including Pokémon-inspired landmarks in the region. The service will operate on weekends and holidays, with stops designed to encourage regional sightseeing.
The project is part of a wider trend in Japan, where entertainment franchises are increasingly being used to support tourism recovery and regional branding efforts.
