An armed man, reportedly traveling from Indiana, was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents near the White House following a confrontation early Sunday morning.
The incident occurred just after midnight, about a block from the White House, with no other injuries reported, according to a statement from the Secret Service. At the time, President Donald Trump was in Florida.
Authorities stated that the Secret Service had been alerted by local police about an individual who was believed to be suicidal and headed from Indiana. Officers located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect and found a man nearby who appeared to fit the description.
As Secret Service agents approached the individual, authorities said the man brandished a firearm, leading to an armed confrontation. The Secret Service then fired shots, striking the man.
The suspect was immediately transported to a local hospital, though his condition remains unknown, according to the Secret Service.
The shooting is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department due to the involvement of law enforcement officers. A request for comment from the department was not immediately returned.
This marks the latest security-related incident near the White House, which has been a highly protected area due to the presence of national leaders and government officials.
