Israeli Airstrike Hits Gaza School, Killing 22 Palestinians, Including Women and Children
An Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza City on Saturday killed at least 22 Palestinians, primarily women and children, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry. The strike targeted al-Falah school in the al-Zaytoun area, which had been sheltering displaced civilians since the onset of the conflict.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the airstrike was aimed at a Hamas command center within the school, claiming the militant group was using the facility to plan and execute attacks against Israeli forces. The IDF stated that it used precise munitions and aerial surveillance to minimize civilian casualties, accusing Hamas of operating from civilian infrastructure and using the population of Gaza for cover.
The IDF also emphasized that Hamas “systematically violates international law by operating from inside civilian areas,” and reiterated that efforts were made to avoid harming civilians in the attack. Despite these assertions, the strike resulted in the deaths of several children and six women, one of whom was pregnant, according to Gaza’s civil defense agency.
Hamas has denied the allegations that it uses schools and other civilian locations for military purposes. The militant group’s government media office condemned the strike and stated that the school was not being used for any military activity.
In addition to the strike on al-Falah school, Gaza’s health ministry reported that four of its workers were killed and six others were injured during what it described as an Israeli attack on a health ministry warehouse in southern Gaza. It was unclear whether the attack was another airstrike. The IDF has not commented on this specific incident involving the health workers.
This latest school strike is one of several since the conflict began on October 7, when Hamas gunmen launched a large-scale attack on Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. In response, Israel has conducted a military campaign in Gaza that has resulted in the deaths of more than 41,000 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) reported earlier this month that six of its employees were killed in an Israeli airstrike on another Gaza school, which was being used as a shelter. That school had been struck five times since the start of the conflict.
The humanitarian toll continues to rise as both sides exchange attacks, with growing concerns over the protection of civilians in conflict zones.
