Virgin Atlantic is set to become the first UK airline to offer free, streaming-quality Wi-Fi to all passengers following a landmark deal with Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink.
Announced by CEO Shai Weiss on Tuesday evening, the partnership will see Virgin Atlantic roll out high-speed Wi-Fi powered by Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite network, providing fast and reliable internet access even in the most remote flight paths. Weiss declined to disclose the financial details of the deal, only describing it as “a lot.”
Under the agreement, Virgin Atlantic plans to equip its entire fleet with Starlink connectivity beginning in the third quarter of 2026. The rollout is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The Wi-Fi will be available across all cabins and will be free of charge for members of the airline’s Flying Club loyalty programme, which is open to all travellers at no cost.
By joining forces with Starlink—a division of Musk’s SpaceX known for its high-speed, low-latency satellite internet—Virgin Atlantic is positioning itself at the forefront of digital in-flight experiences. The move aligns with the airline’s broader ambition to evolve from a challenger brand into a leading, premium long-haul carrier.
In a LinkedIn post, Weiss pledged a $17 billion (£13.3 billion) investment to transform Virgin Atlantic’s operations and customer offerings. “We are investing billions to fly the youngest fleet across the Atlantic; the first UK airline to have free, streaming quality, fleet-wide Wi-Fi; more premium seats and a full retrofit of the 787 fleet; alongside a new app. The best is yet to come,” he wrote.
The investment plan includes a retrofit of Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft starting in 2028 to include more premium seating, as well as new lounge spaces at JFK International Airport in New York and Heathrow Airport in London. A new loyalty scheme is also in the works, designed for occasional travellers who remain loyal to the brand year after year.
In addition to the Starlink deal, Virgin Atlantic has entered a separate partnership with OpenAI to provide real-time voice-based, emotionally intelligent AI concierge services to passengers, further enhancing its digital customer experience.
Virgin Atlantic joins an expanding list of international carriers—such as Qatar Airways, United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and AirBaltic—that have partnered with Starlink to modernize their in-flight connectivity and elevate passenger services.
