Meta Set to Unveil New Technologies at Annual Connect Developer Conference
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, is gearing up to showcase its latest technologies at the annual Connect developer conference scheduled for Wednesday. The event is expected to highlight Meta’s advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) as the company strives to keep pace with competitors like Google and OpenAI.
This year’s conference follows closely on the heels of Apple’s developer event, where the tech giant showcased its own AI software and hardware updates. Attendees are eager to see what innovations Meta has in store.
Focus on Llama 3.1 Large Language Model
One of the key topics anticipated at the conference is Meta’s Llama 3.1 large language model (LLM), which is designed to compete with similar models from OpenAI and Google. Launched in July, Llama 3.1 reportedly runs at approximately half the cost of OpenAI’s GPT-4 in production. As an open-source model, Meta has made the model weights available, allowing companies to train it on custom data and modify it to fit their needs.
Additionally, sources suggest that Meta will announce a new AI chatbot equipped with voice capabilities. Celebrities including Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, John Cena, Awkwafina, and Keegan-Michael Key are expected to lend their voices to enhance the AI’s interactive experience.
Combining AI and Augmented Reality
Beyond AI advancements, Meta is also focusing on integrating augmented reality (AR) technologies. The company has invested heavily in the metaverse, even rebranding itself to reflect its commitment to virtual reality. During the conference, Meta may reveal new developments in augmented reality glasses, potentially alluding to products teased in a photo posted by CEO Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year. This follows the release of Ray-Ban smart glasses in 2021, and Meta has recently announced an extension of its partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the maker of Ray-Ban.
Updates on VR Headsets
However, reports indicate that Meta has scrapped plans for a next-generation mixed-reality headset aimed at competing with Apple’s Vision Pro. Instead, the company is expected to unveil a stripped-down version of its Quest 3 headset, referred to as the Quest 3S. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new headset will aim for a more affordable price point of approximately $300 to $400 (€260 to €360).
As anticipation builds for the Connect event, which will take place at 19:00 CET, the tech world is eager to see how Meta will position itself in the evolving landscape of AI and AR technologies.
