Escalating Tensions: Over 100 Rockets Fired from Lebanon into Israel
More than 100 rockets were launched from Lebanon into Israel early Sunday, some landing near the northern city of Haifa, intensifying fears of an all-out war between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group. This latest escalation follows months of growing tensions between the two, with the situation now rapidly deteriorating into open conflict.
The rockets struck a wider area than previous attacks, reaching deeper into northern Israel and prompting air raid sirens across the region. The Israeli military confirmed that the rockets were fired “toward civilian areas,” signaling a possible escalation in the scope of Hezbollah’s attacks. Prior volleys had primarily targeted military installations.
Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service reported treating four civilians for shrapnel injuries, including a 76-year-old man near Haifa. The barrage also caused damage to buildings and vehicles, though it remains unclear whether the destruction was caused by rockets or Israeli defense interceptors.
This attack follows an Israeli airstrike in Beirut that killed 37 people, including senior Hezbollah leader Ibrahim Akil, as well as women and children. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched a wave of missile attacks, including the debut of its Fadi 1 and Fadi 2 missiles aimed at the Ramat David airbase, southeast of Haifa.
Hezbollah’s leadership claimed responsibility for the strikes, stating they were in response to “repeated Israeli attacks” that have left many civilians dead. The militant group has been escalating its attacks since the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza began nearly a year ago, firing rockets in solidarity with Palestinians.
Israeli forces have responded with a series of airstrikes on southern Lebanon over the past 24 hours, targeting around 400 Hezbollah sites, including rocket launchers. Israel has also turned its attention to northern Lebanon, vowing to restore calm along the border to allow its citizens to return home safely.
The violence comes amid a broader conflict in Gaza, which erupted on October 7 following Hamas attacks that left over 1,200 Israelis dead and around 250 people taken hostage. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports over 41,000 Palestinians killed in the ongoing conflict, with women and children comprising more than half of the casualties.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has vowed to continue retaliating unless a cease-fire is reached in Gaza, though such a resolution remains elusive, despite ongoing talks mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar.
