Leo Varadkar, the Irish Prime Minister, has officially tendered his resignation.
Varadkar met with President Michael D. Higgins at the presidential residence in Dublin on Monday evening to submit his resignation. Sabina Higgins, the president’s wife, was also present at Áras an Uachtaráin.
In March, Varadkar, the former leader of Fine Gael, surprised many with the announcement of his decision to step down from his role as head of government. He stated that he no longer felt suitable for the position, citing both personal and political factors.
At the age of 38, Varadkar became the youngest Taoiseach of Ireland in 2017. He led the coalition government in Dublin, comprised of three parties: Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, and the Green Party.
Simon Harris, the incoming leader of Fine Gael, faces no opposition in his bid for leadership and is poised to be elected as Taoiseach by members of parliament on Tuesday.
