Study Reveals AI Tools Reinforce Gender Stereotypes in Medicine
A groundbreaking study from Flinders University in Australia has found that leading generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools reinforce gender stereotypes in the medical field, particularly by depicting nearly all nurses as women while underrepresenting them in senior medical roles. The research, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, analyzed responses from popular AI models, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s Llama, after inputting nearly 50,000 prompts related to health professionals.
The study revealed that the AI models identified 98% of nurses as female, regardless of their personality traits or professional seniority. Interestingly, the models also showed a notable representation of women in narratives about surgeons and medical doctors, with women comprising between 50% and 84% of doctors and 36% to 80% of surgeons, depending on the specific AI model used.
Dr. Sarah Saxena, an anesthesiologist at the Free University of Brussels, emphasized that while there have been efforts to correct algorithmic biases, the findings suggest that generative AI still perpetuates traditional gender stereotypes in medicine. The study illustrated that the AI models were more likely to categorize agreeable, open, or conscientious health workers as women, while associating junior or inexperienced doctors with female gender identification.
Conversely, the models tended to identify male doctors when they exhibited traits like arrogance, impatience, or incompetence. The study’s authors pointed out that these findings reflect long-standing societal biases, indicating that AI-generated narratives continue to shape perceptions of gender roles within the healthcare profession.
This issue extends beyond representation, as biases in AI tools may also have significant implications for patient care. For instance, a previous study highlighted how ChatGPT tends to stereotype medical diagnoses based on patients’ race and gender. Saxena noted that the integration of AI into healthcare must be approached cautiously to ensure inclusivity and fairness, warning that entrenched biases could adversely affect patients.
Furthermore, Dr. Saxena’s research on AI-generated images revealed similar trends; women were often depicted in pediatric or obstetric roles, while men were portrayed in higher-stakes cardiac positions. “There’s still this glass ceiling that’s being reinforced by these publicly available tools,” she stated.
As the healthcare industry increasingly relies on AI to streamline processes and assist in patient care, addressing these biases has become critical. Saxena concluded, “This needs to be tackled before we can really integrate this and offer this widely to everyone, to make it as inclusive as possible.”
