Cataract Surgery Tops List of Common Surgical Procedures in EU Hospitals
A recent report from Eurostat reveals that cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgical procedure in European hospitals, with approximately 4.73 million surgeries conducted across EU member states in 2022. The data underscores the prevalence of this eye surgery, which involves the removal of the eye’s lens, as a crucial treatment for vision impairment.
In 2022, 16 EU countries reported performing over 1,000 cataract surgeries per 100,000 inhabitants. France led the pack in the number of procedures, while Romania recorded the fewest, with only 1,493 surgeries and fewer than 500 operations per 100,000 residents.
Caesarean Sections and Other Common Procedures
Following cataract surgery, caesarean sections emerged as another commonly performed medical procedure, with at least 1.10 million deliveries conducted via incision in the abdomen and uterus across the EU. Cyprus and Romania reported the highest rates, with 681.6 and 446.9 caesarean sections performed per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively. Conversely, Finland recorded the lowest rate, with only 157.3 caesareans per 100,000 inhabitants.
Additional prevalent surgeries include cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal), knee replacements, appendectomies (appendix removal), hysterectomies, and excisions of mammary glands. The rates of cholecystectomies and appendectomies showed less variation across EU countries compared to other surgical procedures, while the frequency of partial excisions of mammary glands varied significantly, with Belgium performing 141.4 procedures per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to Poland’s 14.2.
Trends in Surgical Operations
The report highlights a general increase in surgical procedures relative to population size. Laparoscopic hysterectomies, a minimally invasive technique, have seen a rise in prevalence across almost all EU countries. Similarly, the frequency of laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernias, cataract surgeries, and total knee replacements has also increased significantly.
However, not all surgical procedures are on the rise. The frequency of hysterectomies and appendectomies has declined in recent years, despite advancements in laparoscopic techniques. Notably, between 2012 and 2022, 17 out of 25 EU countries reported a decrease in caesarean sections.
The data indicates a complex landscape of surgical procedures in Europe, with an overall trend towards minimally invasive techniques and a shift in the frequency of certain operations, reflecting changing healthcare practices and patient needs.
