Israeli Prime Minister Vows Retaliation After Houthi Missile Lands in Central Israel
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that Yemen’s Houthi rebels will face a “heavy price” following a missile attack that reached central Israel for the first time. The missile landed in an uninhabited area early Sunday, with shrapnel suggesting that Israel’s air defense systems failed to intercept it before it entered Israeli airspace.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the missile, which struck central Israel, had been fired from Yemen—approximately 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) away. This marks the first instance of a Houthi missile reaching such a distance into Israeli territory. The IDF is investigating how the missile managed to penetrate so deeply into Israeli airspace, despite repeated interception attempts on Sunday.
Initial assessments suggest that the missile likely fragmented in mid-air, which may have been a result of its advanced technology. The Houthis claimed that the missile used was a new type of hypersonic weapon, which could explain the difficulties encountered by Israel’s defense systems in intercepting it.
The Houthis, an armed group that controls significant portions of Yemen and aligns itself with the Iran-led “axis of resistance” against Israel, the United States, and other Western nations, declared that the attack was conducted in solidarity with the Palestinians. They warned that more attacks could be expected as the first anniversary of the 7 October attacks approaches.
Fragments from the missile landed in the city of Modiin, causing damage at a railway station, and in open ground near Israel’s main international airport on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. Reports indicate that the damage might have been exacerbated by Israel’s own interceptor missiles.
The incident has heightened tensions in the region, with Netanyahu’s response signaling a firm stance against the Houthis and a commitment to ensuring Israel’s security. The attack highlights the evolving nature of regional conflicts and the growing capabilities of the Houthis’ missile technology.
